“From the day we made our minds up about our Scottish Highlands elopement, you have brought us happiness in more forms than one.”
Never wanting a big wedding, the idea of a Scottish Highlands elopement was right up Taysia and Tanner’s street. Looking for somewhere remote that they could truly feel lost was important to them – and when they found Ardvreck Castle and Lochinver they knew they’d struck gold.
After getting ready at Waterloo House (we stayed at the equally awesome Davar) we all trekked off to the Castle. Meeting the registrar in the car park along with her husband – who had brought brollies and happily carried those and a wee table for signing the register – the wind whipped at Taysia’s Alex Veil dress, the rain battered off all of us but it felt exciting, exhilarating. After an emotional ceremony we waved goodbye to Tanner’s Mam and brother so that we could take the newlyweds away for their photographs. Hilariously, it felt like every time we jumped back in the car to get to the next location the rain would go off, then would seemingly start shortly after we got out the car again – typical haha! And not just rain, RAAAIIIN.
As with any elopement in Scotland – you’ve got to be prepared for potentially mental weather. Bring layers, don’t be scared of the rain and the wind – because that is pretty much our go to climate here in ‘Sunny Scotland’, plus, it looks mega epic in photographs :D Taysia and Tanner could write the book on not giving a sh*t about the weather – deciding to just brave the elements and embrace their adventure – no matter what shape it took. We loved that they had the same feelings as us about it. Cameras and clothes will dry, but that sweet moment when you’re marrying your lobster in the wilds can’t ever be captured again. We’re big believers in shouting ‘ADVENTURE’ into the howling wind, and Taysia and Tanner shouted it right beside us…magic :)
Hey! Taysia and Tanner – do you have any advice for others planning their own Scottish Highlands elopement?
“Relax! You will have a once in a lifetime adventure, meet amazing people along the way and fall in love with Scotland so much so you want to move there :-O If you want to enjoy even more of the highlands and the NC500 (Our version of Route 66) don’t stay in one place for 2 weeks, instead book places to stay around your chosen route, and don’t be afraid to get lost without a map.
When applying for your Visa don’t be afraid to ask questions, the Highland Council were so helpful and gave us so much advice. Also, make sure you have all your paperwork in order (more on that at the end of the blog).
Also, don’t book a 3 cylinder piece of sh*t car.”
I feel like the best way to end this blog is by sayng ‘givn’r’. And if you haven’t heard that word before, you might not know any Candians. It’s not just a word – it’s a state of being. I hear ye, I hear ye – but what does it mean? Giving it everything, getting stuck right in – and for a Scottish translation – ‘pure gaun for it’. Taysia and Tanners approach to their wild weather Scottish Highlands elopement? 100% GIVIN’R :D
